I am researching learning in sports spaces. As part of this work, I design learning environments and artifacts, and use various qualitative and quantitive methods to evaluate my designs. This work requires employing various theoretical frameworks, methods, and tools from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Learning Sciences (LS).
Current Projects: HCI + Learning (e.g., how to design and evaluate sports as learning spaces?)
The work on the subsequent sections rely on a human-centered design approach throughout the design process.
Design
- Design of learning experiences: I have co-designed and facilitated a couple of versions of “camp: bit” (ball, information, and technology), a sports camp that authentically embeds CS artifacts to engage children with CS concepts and practices. Here is a paper on the first design. We have done several iterations at this point, and we are writing a set of design principles for such designs that would be publish at the end of 2023.
- Supporting making in sports learning environments: It is extremely important to support newcomers in making activities for many reasons including their ability to enjoy the process and decide whether to participate again. This requires carefully making design choices to make the process as supportive as possible. I am currently working on a paper to be published in the Fall 2023.
methods: themaic analysis, survey and journal analysis
tools:
Learning
- I conducted making sessions to identify how children’s learning constructs change after engaging with the making process. Paper is currently under review.
- I am analyzing in what ways can we support children’s in bringing their ideas to fruition with available prototyping tools. I am analyzing multimodal data from making workshops to identify children’s practices to bring their ideas to life.
methods: artifact analysis, interviews

Tools
- I am currently studying prototyping tools to evaluate their abilities to support creativity for student-athletes seeking to make artifacts for sports spaces.
- I am working on a wearable device to support students collect health and performance data.

tools: makecode platform; sensor kit,
Past Projects: Social Computing + Governance (e.g., how rules, power, and norms, applied through technology tools, set the conditions that influence people’s behavior)
Data Science
Online Dissemination of Science: Most published research is wrong. This project looked at who shares retracted scientific papers on twitter. See paper.
methods: data science pipeline
tools: GitHub, VSC, Jupyter NotebookLearning Processes and Network Structures: Large group deliberation is complicated for several reasons, including limited communication among members and hubs that greatly influence other members through their social capital and influence. We modeled and simulated network structures to overcome these issues by breaking down large groups and shuffling them periodically. [Paper underview at Journal Nature Communications]
